START THE NEW SEASON AT THE LIBRARY

The children have been back to school for a few days.  The hustle and bustle of getting them ready has slowed down.  Summer is still trying to hold on with the hot and humid weather we have experienced the past few days.  The days are getting shorter and nights are getting cooler.  Does that mean that fall is around the corner?  Yes, I am afraid it is.  Fall is one of my favorite seasons.  The leaves start to turn their brilliant colors and the orchards in the area are beginning to pick those delicious red, crisp apples.  Too bad we can’t bottle this season and skip winter altogether.

September is the season of new beginnings at the library.  Story hour registration is happening and the new fall books are arriving.  September is also New Library Card Month.  Why not come into the library and get your card along with your children.  Introduce them to a life-time of enjoyment.  Where can you read all those best sellers for both children and adults for free?  Where can you get those free or almost free library passes that will admit your family to hours of enjoyment at a local museum? (list of passes on our website)  Where can you get a free internet connection to surf the web or to check your email during library hours?  Yes, that is right the library has a wealth of information and activities waiting for you for free with just a library card.

This month on September 8th at 10 AM, we will hold our registrations for preschool story hours.  For the first time, we will offer a Tiny Tot Story hour along with our other story hours during the fall session.  This Tiny Tot Story hour was very popular this summer.  We had a very nice turnout of little ones ages 6 months to two years old.  There is enough interest for this age group, therefore we will offer the first six week session on Monday mornings at 10 AM.  You must pre register as we will be limiting the size of this class to ten little ones.  Included in the story hour will be music, rhymes dancing, marching and simple stories.  Call the library for more information on this story hour.

For the other children ages 2 through 6, we will once again offer story hours which will include two to three stories and a theme based craft.  These will be offered on Mondays at 1 PM, Wednesdays at 10 AM and 1 PM and Fridays at 10 AM.  Once again you must pre-register for the session that fits into your schedule.  This registration will take place on Wednesday September 8th at 10 AM.  You must have a valid Taylor Library card and come into the library to pick your time.  Phone registrations will start after 1 PM on September 8th to fill the remaining spots.  For more information, call the library.

Several books come to mind when a child is getting ready to go off to school for the first time.  These will help the child feel more at ease on that special day when he/she waves good bye to mom and dad for the first time.

Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School by Herman Parish is such a book that will introduce little ones to what might happen on the first day.  From making new friends, to meeting the new teacher, to having your own desk and then getting use to lunch and recess, all of these are seen through the eyes of Amelia Bedelia.  This book is suitable for children in preschool.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn is one of my all time favorites to recommend to parents of school aged children who are going off to school for the first time.  The book is for any child young or older who confronts a difficult situation and needs assurance.  Chester Raccoon seeks love and reassurance from his mother as he goes out into the world to attend his first day of school.  Mother Raccoon tells Chester a wonderful secret that will make his time away at school as warm and cozy as his times at home.  She kisses the palm of his hand and he feels the warmth and love rush up his arm and into his heart.  Mom tells him that whenever you feel lonely at school press your hand to your cheek and the kiss will fill you with “toasty warm thoughts.”  The secret works for Chester and he makes it through the day at school.   This is a wonderful, heartwarming story that is suitable for ages 3 and up.

These books plus many others can be found at the library at anytime during the year, but be sure to look for them in our special back to school display.  For further information or questions, please call the library at 432-7186 or visit our website at www.taylorlibrary.org
